Homework due in class, Oct 31. Remember to show your work, neatly.
1) Complete the missing vector magnitudes and angles. (6 points)

2) The following asteriods are found at closest approach to the Sun (perihelion) and have the given orbital periods. Use Keplers's 3rd to determine if the asteriods might hit the Earth. (6 points)

3) What are the perihelion and aphelion speeds of Venus? What are the perhelion and aphelion distances of this planet? Compute the product of speed times distance and interpret your result. Remember to get your units straight (Zeilik 1-5). (6 points)
4) Determine the semi-major axis and eccentricity of the following orbits from the information given: (8 points)

(Answer: The first one is a=2.45 A.U's, and e=0.429, the last one has a=infinite and e=-2.3)
5) A telecommunications satellite is in a circular orbit with a siderael period of 24 hours. Using Newton's formulation of Kepler's 3rd law, what is its distance from the surface of the Earth (Zeilik 1-7). Watch your units and draw a diagram to help out. (4 points)
6) In terms of the gravitational acceleration, g, at the surface of the Earth, find the surface gravitational acceleration of a) the Moon, b) the Sun and c) Jupiter (Zeilik 1-4). (6 points)
